While Steel Blue ready-mix concrete is actually a blue pigment, especially prior to being mixed into the concrete, the end result is a lot more of a darker grey with a slightly blue hue to it.
This colour is quite popular and once you have the mix fully cured you don't really think of it as being a blue. This color lies in between Smoke and Black Onyx and that is exactly how we think of it, still in the more common grey concrete colours.
When clients are looking for a darker concrete this is usually one of the darkest colours we show. You want to keep in mind that being a ready-mix concrete it is hard to go back. You can make it darker but you can't really ever make it lighter.
When choosing darker concrete, heat is also something to think about. Is the concrete pad going to be in an area where it will have direct sunlight and how will that affect things like being barefoot. Remember, you can always go darker after if you choose too light of a color by using a topical colouring.
Integral Ready Mix Concrete is superior to topical coatings because it is mixed evenly and completely throughout the concrete prior to it being poured.
This means that if there is a crack or cut to the concrete over time, that the natural concrete colour does not show through.
This helps protect the overall look of the concrete even if damage or chips occur over time.
